Colin Spencer: While it was Adam & The Antz’s period on Do It Records that got Colin first buying records, his collection really began growing at a significant pace when he heard the excellence of Depeche Mode’s then new release ‘Get The Balance Right! (Combination Mix)’ (Mute Records) on the long-gone Rainbow Records shop’s customer deck in Loughborough, England. That 12” catalysed what has become a 35-year+ passion.
Before he started broadcasting on radio in 2003, Colin’s musical journey had included starting a school newspaper that could print his interviews with touring artists, reviews for fanzines and a student newspaper, organising gigs, setting up a record label that grew out of a recording/rehearsal studio, project managing chart-topping compilation albums, A&R, TV adverts and programme syncs, commissioning music for global sports events and plotting the best route between any visited place’s record shops to maximise browsing and buying time.
Radio wise, Artefaktor is his first station based outside of England. He has done a night-time programme for 15 years on a 50+ year old community station, breakfast programme on an (ex-pirate) FM station for getting on for 3 years and, in 2017, helped launch a DAB station in London for tradespeople.
Although forever keen to find and share the next awesome song or (re)mix from whatever source, if you look inside him there remains a core of electronic synth music.
The career covering interview Colin did with OMD’s Andy McCluskey, initiated by the release and touring of The Punishment Of Luxury album, in 2017 has reawakened his interest and enjoyment from wide ranging conversations with pioneers: here’s to more of these that we then hope to share with you in 2018…
From 6 January 2018, you can hear Colin’s #Electrocurated programme on Saturdays on www.ArtefaktorRadio.com – to know what features check Twitter’s @ColinsCuts. Programme uploads (including the OMD interview) are on www.Mixcloud.com/ColinSpencer.
